17 - Baths of the aqueduct

This thermal complex, only partially excavated, was erected during the Early Imperial period (1st-2nd centuries AD). As with other buildings in Conimbriga, the construction of the Late Imperial wall seems to have seriously affected this urban facility. The structures that can be seen today correspond to a late renovation, which gave rise to a thermal building of much more modest dimensions. Leaning against the aqueduct and only a couple of meters away from the large reservoir that ensured the distribution of drinking water to Conimbriga, the thermal establishment consists of a small cold-water pool and a set of heated rooms, with four apses, and the respective furnace is also visible. A recent architectural intervention took advantage of the characteristics of the ruins of this building and the surrounding area in order to allow its recreational use, namely the presentation of small theater, music and other performances.
