Christianity

There is no secure reference or evidence for the presence of Christianity in Conimbriga before the 6th century, although it is evident that, from the conversion of Constantine in 337 AD onward, the city officially became Christian.

The earliest Christian inscription records the death of a believer in the year 522 (or 532). It is followed by two more funerary slabs dated between 538 and 541, dates already close to the first bishop known to us, Lucentius, who attended the first Councils of Braga (561 or 563 and 572).
